Maureen Carlson's
Fantasy Week - Ireland 2017

Hello Potential Travelers for the 2017
Fantasy Week in Ireland with Maureen.

 11 Days in Ireland,
Sept. 26 - Oct. 6, 2017.

"What better place than Ireland for a class that
includes Wee Folk, Wonder, Beauty and Mythical Lanscapes where Stories Dwell?"

For the past 18 years, Maureen has conducted one or more Fantasy Week classes each year at Maureen Carlson's Center for Creative Arts in Jordan, MN USA.  In 2017 she's taking the experience to Ireland!

Why Ireland? Because for the last three Fantasy Week classes, we were forunate to have as one of the students Fr. John Friel, from Crossgar, Northern Ireland. He invited us to come to Ireland in 2017, so here we are! Making plans.

Pictured here is
some of Maureen's work which could be
re-imagined with an Irish flair.

Fantasy Week - Ireland 2017
will be inspired by the landscape, myths, architecture and history that surrounds Tobar Mhuire Retreat and Conference Center. Participants are encouraged to bring their cameras and/or sketch pads to capture textures and shapes, colors and moods. Each student will then design a piece or pieces from polymer clay and mixed media which incorporates those elements, or suggestions of them, into a work of art. Of course, Maureen will be there each step of the way to help the participants reach their goals.

Materials available for classroom use will be polymer clay, Apoxie Sculpt, flexible molding supplies, paint, wire, cardboard, fiberfil, paper and fabric. There will be scavenger hunts along the water ways and wooded paths (always a mystery) as well as opportunities to browse in a few irish shops and markets.

Time To Explore: There will also be time spent away from the classroom exploring other parts of Ireland, including the rugged northwest coast and the cities of Dublin and Belfast.

With camera and sketchpad in hand, these are sure to provide further inspiration for creative works, not only for the week in Ireland, but for studio time once we return home

You Tube Videos

John suggested these You Tube videos for a glimpse of choices available to us. Of course we can't do it all! You'll be asked for your input as we get closer to finalizing the details.

County Down (local to Crossgar)

Belfast City (local to Crossgar)

Derry City & Northwest Donegal

FLIGHTS: Check with your travel agent or your preferred airline for travel options.

These websites have also been suggested as alternate sources for flight informaton.

ARRIVAL: You'll  need to arrive in Dublin by midday on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Time to be announced as we get closer to the date.  I'll be flying out on Sept. 25 to arrive on the 26th.

DEPARTURE: Check-out from Tobar Mhuire is Friday, Oct. 6, 2017

Note: When scheduling your return flight, keep this in mind. Crossgar is 1 1/2 hours from the Dublin airport. For international flights, it is suggested that you be at the airport 2 1/2 hours before your departure time. That's 4 hours required for travel and check-in time. This means that departing flights should be scheduled for 11:00 AM or later so that we all don't have to get up at 0-dark-30 to be on time!

Crossgar is located in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. We will also be traveling in the Republic of Ireland. More info on exchange rates will be provided as we get closer to travel time.

 As of early January 2017:
1 GBP = 1.2324 USD
1 USD = .810 GBP

A Note From Maureen:

Ah, Irish stories, Irish You Tube videos, e-mail conversations with Geraldine, the secretary at Tobar Mhuire, and with John Friel, our Irish connection and friend extraordinaire. Hours spent figuring out USD (Dollar) and GPB (British Pound) conversion rates, listening to Irish music, dreaming dreams. These are some of the things that I've been doing to work out the preliminary details for this trip.
